hubertedesmar: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Session

hubertedesmar: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Session

This video is a small clip on a counselor helping a woman who is experiencing stress and anxiety about specific life challenges. The counselor is using a popular counseling technique, cognitive behavioral therapy. School Psychologists and guidance counselors often use this counseling technique for students with anxiety disorders and depression. As a school psychology intern, I constantly research and use resources that teach me how to use certain counseling techniques.

Summary of Prensky's Book

I found that Prensky describes important academic concepts that are helpful for educators to use in the classroom. There were several chapters that improved my understanding of how to enhance the education system. I really liked the chapter about teaching with realism and relevancy. As I explained on my chapter blogs, teachers need to introduce concepts to students that they think will be helpful for students to learn in the future. When teachers include class topics that are important for them to learn in life, they students will be motivated to learn and perform well in school. Prensky explains how partnership and collaboration among teachers and students is very important in the education system. Teachers, who believe that interactive activities promote engaging learning, are likely to have success in their teaching experience. In many of the chapters, Prensky describes teachers who use group activities in their lessons because it gives students the opportunity to learn discover the way they feel comfortable learning. When students are given options to learn in the classroom, students' motivation levels also increase. Prensky stresses the importance of teachers utilizing group activities and discussions in the classroom. Teachers may also decide to use technology in their lesson plans as a type of differentiated instructional style. Prensky’s book is a very important resource for teachers who would like to use new teaching methods to improve students’ learning experiences.

Web 2.0 Tools

I really like this website, Mindomo, because it allows students to complete problem solving activities that may be required for class. In many situations, students at secondary grade levels, are assigned to complete many written assignments.  Before completing these assignments, students are required to brainstorm and organize their ideas. For students who have trouble with completing writing assignments, this particular tool can be very helpful. Students will also be able to work with other students on written assignments while using this tool.

Skype seems to be a very interesting website tool that allows students to communicate with students in other countries. This tool can be useful for students who are studying culture, countries, and different styles of living. Through using this particular tool, students will be able to have on-line communication with people, which is a form of engagement. Also students will share their ideas and opinions on issues they feel are relevant to discuss (collaboration). It is important to note that you can use this tool without paying anything when one uses the video communication methods.

I like the Abiword website because it allows students to work together on school documents. As I mentioned before, writing skills has been a major concern for teachers over the past years. Students who have difficulty completing written assignments may benefit from using cooperative learning strategies. Students can be paired with other students who have stronger writing skills and they can work on documents together and discuss strategies and ideas for each of their assignments.

Doodlewall website seems to be an effective tool for students who would like to discuss specific questions from class.  Students will be able to use a white board and share ideas and thoughts about anything that is concerning to them. I find that this particular tool will be beneficial for students who would like to review math problems with each other. Students can also exchange their ideas and thoughts about class lessons. http://doodlewall.com/

Students will be able to have study with each other online and review specific topics that are interesting to him. The students are asked to create flash cards to help them review important topics. I like that students are able to have study sessions online through using flashcards and  a discussion board to explain their concerns with each other.

Reflection on Ken Robinson

This video encourages school professionals to utilize non-traditional teaching methods in the classroom. Direct instruction may have been effective in the past; however, because of the increase of diversity of learners, teachers need to consider using instructional styles such as cooperative learning. I like the example shown in the video about students with ADHD who have a difficult time sustaining attention in the classroom. Similarly, that is how most students react when they are not receiving effective instruction. After watching this film, I learned that teachers need to start using activities that are highly effective and interesting for students.
